Not even a hundred years is enough. As then and today and in the future and in the past music and songs are part of a continuous evolution of the human species. At the same time the arts have always been an integral part of martial propaganda and the same musical theme can exist as an anthem or a paean from both or more parties involved.

Back then a posting to "Mesopolonika" (a word made as a juxtaposition of Salonika - the Greek city Thessaloniki - and Mesopotamia) was considered an "easy number" by those in the trenches on the Western Front. Also "Mesopolonika" was used as a mocking slang for soldiers who found themselves to the Western Front and took a different view - hence the comment "When God first made Hell He decided that it was too easy on the damned so He added flies and called it Mesopotamia".

All tracks taken from digitized Cylinders (Edison Blue Amberol format) and 78rpm shellac records.
