about

Giovanni Apostolu was born as Ιωάννης Αποστόλου | Yannis Apostolou in Athens (or Menidi) circa 1860. He started singing in 1888 and touring as leading tenor singer for the Greek diaspora in Egypt, Turkey, Russia, Poland and Hungary. In 1890 he went to Milan and over the next 14 years he sang in all major opera houses in Italy including multiple La Scala de Milano successive performances. He returned in Greece (Piraeus 1901-1902) and then spent the last three years of his life in Milan and Naples. Rumor has it that these years, following the previous ones, he had an intense and prodigal life, without avoiding the various abuses of the time. He died of a heart attack at the height of his career in Naples on 28 August 1905.
